The Autons are an artificial life form from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and adversaries of the Doctor. First appearing in Jon Pertwee's first serial as the Doctor, Spearhead from Space in 1970, they were the first monsters on the show to be presented in color.
Autons are essentially life-sized plastic dummies, automatons animated by the Nestene Consciousness, an extraterrestrial, disembodied gestalt intelligence which first arrived on Earth in hollow plastic meteorites. Their name comes from Auto Plastics, the company that was infiltrated by the Nestenes and subsequently manufactured their Auton shells in Spearhead.
The Autons also appear in the Anthro Saga and are amongst the three robots to do so. Others being the Daleks and the Cybermen but despite their appearance their role is not as big as the other two are. In the series they retain their old appearence and three sets exist. Mountains, Forests and Streets. The Autons on the mountains wear navy blue trousers, black shoes and a dark green waterproof jacket though some wear navy blue waterproof jackets. The ones in the forest wear black T-Shirts, military trousers, black shoes and military jackets.
The ones on the street either wear a suit with a brown trench coat or a light blue sweatshirt, black trousers and shoes with a long grey coat or even 19th century/early 20th century style clothing. Some of them also wear the circus clothing depicted in Terror of the Autons which is a white shirt, trousers, shoes and gloves, a yellow hat with a red stripe across the middle, a yellow jacket and a carnival mask. These Autons appear in the dream of Bella and so do ones dressed to look like clowns to scare her as she is coulrophobic.
Autons conceal deadly weapons within their hands, which can kill or vaporize their targets. In the Anthro Saga this gun can now stun and when fired a second time they act as a teleport beam. The typical Auton does not look particularly realistic, resembling a mannequin, being robotic in its movements and mute yet in the Anthro Saga they can now run and interact in the same way they do in their first appearence and can even speak and teleport. When they speak some have a flat sounding voice whilst others are more gurgling. In the Anthro Saga the Autons that stalk and later attack are all adult males.
Despite the fact Autons are controlled by the Nestene they are now controlled by The Illusionist and his right hand man The Hypnotist. They first appear in the dream-mare of Miroslav. In the dream he and the other older Junta children consisting of himself, Alexander, Natalya, Artashes, Lana, Laimdota, Stanislava, Stefania, Hanna and other older Junta children do an exploration of Ashtiago streets and later on the mountains. During the time in the street they are stalked by Autons who do no harm but as the group distance gets larger the Autons come closer and soon a fight breaks out. In the fight Stanislava kicks one of them over and pulls off it's head and one attacks Natalya until Miroslav pulls it's hand off at which point it tries to strangle him until Artashes pulls it off and stamps on it before throwing it over a wall. The signal is then withdrawn and the Autons vanish.
They later appear on the mountains where there is only one surviving male in the Junta and the others are females. The Hypnotist manages to split the group up and though there was a fight the group's last surviving leaders Miroslav and Natalya know their days are numbered and flee. Meanwhile the others are captured and whilst Hanna and Laimdota are imprisoned the other Junta girls are executed. The Autons make no further appearence until the nightmare of Bella and are also encountered by her mother Maria.
