Hafez al Assad

Hafez al Assad was a Syrian politician who served as President of Syria from 1970 to his death in 2000. Much like Saddam Hussein of Iraq he was a participant in the 1963 Syrian coup that brought the Ba'ath party to power in Syria before he came to power himself in 1970, to stay in power a massive personality cult around him and his family was created. But at the price his presidency also caused Islamist uprising in which thousands were killed even Syrian people were killed in the Hama massacre of 1982. The character Hafez is named after him.
