Mengistu Haile Mariam is an Ethiopian politician who was the most prominent member of the Derg the communist military Junta that governed Ethiopia from 1974 to 1987. He was also the country's head of state from 1987 to 1991. After his overthrow he fled to Zimbabwe and remains there despite an Ethiopian court finding him guilty in absentia of genocide. Some estimate he was responsible for 2 million deaths that occured during the Red Terror from 1977-1978. The Vixen trial judge Mengistu is named after him.
